SAIEE Lightning Chapter presents: Multiple Strike Point Lightning Flashes

As the IEC approaches the new version of the IEC 62305 Lightning Protection standard, one of the key additions is the recommendation to adopt a “Ground-strike point density (Nsg)” over the well-established “Flash density (Ng)” parameter in lightning protection designs. The discussion around lightning flashes, strokes and termination points has been ongoing since this idea was introduced. With the advent of modern lightning location system technologies and high-speed video studies, we are finally able to understand these phenomena better than we ever have before - this year, three scientific journal articles were published investigating the occurrence of multiple ground-strike point flashes in South Africa, The United States of America and Europe.
