In this edition of the Center for Latinx Digital Media's Virtual Seminar Series, Prof. Laura Isabel Serna (University of Southern California) presented "The Golden Age of Film Distribution? Struggles Between Capital and Labor in Mexico's mid-20th Century Film Industry." Yena Lee, a Ph.D. at Northwestern University and an affiliate of the Center, moderated the event. Presentation abstract: The distribution sector played a central role in the formation of the Mexican Film Industry from the 1930s through the 1940s. Examining why and how distribution became a wedge issue in conflicts between American film distribution companies and workers in the Mexican cinema industry, allows us to see how embedded the Mexican film industry was in transnational media networks even as it produced films with distinctly Mexican aesthetics.
