The Last Steam Service - 15 Guineas Special 11 August 1968

Footage from the '15 Guineas Special' on 11 August 1968. It was the last steam hauled passenger service on British Railways. The train is travelling from Dent station in Yorkshire north towards Carlisle on the Settle-Carlisle railway. The National Railway Museum will be holding "1968", an event from 24 May -- 1 June to celebrate 40 years since the end of steam on mainline railways. The event will see Oliver Cromwell (the train in the film, currently being restored specifically to star in our 1968 celebrations) visit the Museum and first hand accounts from people who witnessed the end of steam.
