Title: NLM Colloquia Lecture – Mechanisms Regulating Fate and Maturation of Forebrain Inhibitory Interneurons – Timothy J. Petros, PhD Description: Listen to this month’s NLM Colloquia on Biomedical Data Science and Computational Biology Research lecture, “Mechanisms Regulating Fate and Maturation of Forebrain Inhibitory Interneurons.” About the speaker: Dr. Petros obtained his PhD from Columbia University, where he investigated the guidance factors that regulate retinal ganglion cell projections and explored the mechanisms that regulate interneuron differentiation. At New York University, he began to untangle the intrinsic genetic programs and extrinsic brain environment factors that direct interneuron diversity and maturation. His lab at NICHD lab utilizes innovative, cutting-edge, and multifaceted approaches to characterize the gene regulatory mechanisms and transcriptional cascades that drive initial interneuron fate decisions during embryogenesis and how these processes go awry in neurodevelopmental disorders. Their recent development of an “Epigenome Atlas” of the embryonic mouse brain and follow-up studies explore how specific chromatin interactions and epigenetic processes regulate interneuron fate. About the series: The NLM Colloquia on Biomedical Data Science and Computational Biology Research is a series of scientific lectures featuring experts from across the bioinformatics community in the rapidly evolving fields of biomedical data science and computational biology research. The Colloquia hosts experts from outside of NLM to share with research communities how their work impacts biomedical discovery. This series is proudly presented by the NLM Division of Intramural Research, a premier hub of innovation for computational biology and biomedical data science.
