The Severn Valley Railway’s 2025 Autumn Diesel Bash celebrated 65 years of the English Electric type 3 Co-Co diesel locomotive, better known, since the introduction of the TOPS (Total Operations Processing System) numbering scheme in the mid-1970s, as the class 37. The event featured five preserved examples portraying the history of the class over the decades. D6948 (37248) from the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway appeared in as-built BR green livery, 37264 (D6964) from the North Yorkshire Moors Railway appeared in the all-blue livery of the 1970s and 80s, 37688 (D6905/37205) ‘Great Rocks’ from LSL, Crewe sported the Railfreight Construction sub-sector triple-grey livery of the late 1980s, 37263 (D6963) from Telford (and coming to the end of it’s period on-loan to the SVR) carried the BR Departmental grey livery of the early 1990s, and finally 37250 (D6950) from the Wensleydale Railway appeared, newly repainted, in post-privatisation EWS red and gold livery. These five were joined by a few members of class 37 that can still be seen operating on the mainline today, Railfreight liveried 37508 from Loram UK, 37518 ‘Fort William’ from West Coast Railways, and 37423, 37501 ‘Teesside Steelmaster’, and 37901 ‘Mirrlees Pioneer’ from Europhoenix Rail.
