(30 Jan 2026) RESTRICTION SUMMARY: ASSOCIATED PRESS Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania - 15 January 2026 1. 2025 Westminster Masters Agility Champion Emily Klarman with one of her border collies, named Swish, at a training center called UDog 2. SOUNDBITE (English) Emily Klarman, 2025 Westminster Masters Agility Champion Handler: "The Border Collie has won over 50% of the Westminster overall wins, if not probably more.” 3. Various slow motion shots of Swish running through weave poles 4. Swish going through tunnel 5. SOUNDBITE (English) 2025 Westminster Masters Agility Champion Handler: “The border collies are really good at agility based off of a few factors. First is they're very intelligent. So agility can be a bit complicated as far as the details that can go into it, how tight they need to turn, which obstacle they need go to. The different venues can increase the challenge of the sequence in order. And it takes a smarter dog to be able to do it. That is certainly not to say that any dog couldn't do it, but the border collies tend to pick up on it a bit easier. The way that they are built and structured lets them physically get through the course a little bit easier as well. So they're bred to be able to go out on long runs and pivots and that sort of thing. So them being able to bend over jumps and run over the dog walk is a little easier for them than maybe like a pug would be. So they are able to physically and mentally navigate through the course a little bit easier than some other dogs might be able to.” 6. Klarman and Swish warming up before running agility course 7. SOUNDBITE (English) Emily Klarman, 2025 Westminster Masters Agility Champion Handler: "I always like to tell to my students that agility is a big conversation that we're having with our dogs and so like I said earlier we are going to tell them verbally and non-verbally how to get through the course, whether it's a different command or a body position.” 12. SOUNDBITE (English) Emily Klarman, 2025 Westminster Masters Agility Champion Handler “If I’m going through with a more upbeat tone or happy tone and I’m really moving forward I think the dog would respond to that. Even though I would like to say it is something physical that we are doing but a lot of it is really emotional and it's hard to quite articulate to say that it's something physical as much as it's almost spiritual.” 15. Slow motion shot of Swish the border collie going over bar jump STORYLINE: Border collies have sprinted, swerved and soared past the competition since the Westminster Kennel Club introduced its Masters Agility Championship in 2014. The breed has captured nine of the first 12 titles, thanks to a blend of intelligence, athleticism and intense focus that seems tailor-made for the sport. The 2025 champion, Emily Klarman, training her border collie Swish at UDog near Philadelphia, says the dogs’ sharp minds and agile bodies give them an edge in the intricate obstacle courses. “They handle the pressure of it a little bit better than some other breeds,” she says. Regardless of breed, becoming an agility champion takes extensive training, technique and strategy.
