People get agitated about plane crashes and violence but are mostly complacent about the greatest killer of them all: old age. Nick Bostrom wants to change this. He spins a fable about a dragon terrorizing a kingdom, demanding a tribute of tens of thousands of souls each day. Eventually the people develop a dragon-killing weapon and slay the dragon. Likewise, Bostrom says, we need to develop the means to slow or halt senescence, the deterioration of the body and mind with age. And we need to approach this task with the urgency we might bring to resisting the onslaught of a terrible dragon.
