Rob on Thin Ice!

Guided Winter Climbing and Coaching 1st March 2025 #iceclimbing Rob and Ben’s guided winter climbing and coaching day one, climbing thin ice at the start of Advent Cracker before heading up the main route in Cnap Coire na Spreidhe in the Cairngorms. Safely on a rope anchored to a thin snow bollard Rob pushes the ice climbing to the limit and shows what is possible even on very thin brittle ce and how quickly it can go wrong with any lapse in technique such as lifting his heel as Rob safely takes a fall! From the Cairngorm ski area carpark it’s about an hour and a half hike up to Torr Buttress near Cnap Coire na Spreidhe at 1150 metres. We then abseiled down past the cornice before down climbing and traversing to the the the foot of the ‘Slabby Ribs’ area which I knew had an aesthetic build-up of thin ice and this provided the ideal opportunity to look at thin ice climbing techniques before lunch and then looking at further winter climbing lead techniques before our climb. We finished the day by climbing the lovely three pitches of Advent Cracker and back up onto the Cairngorm plateau before heading down.
