ASMR. Watch and listen to the sounds of the Australian Ringneck (Barnardius zonarius), a parrot native to Australia. The species has adapted to all conditions except extreme tropical and highland areas. Currently, four subspecies are recognised, each with a distinct range. The one shown here is the B. z. semitorquatus subspecies found in the south western forests of coastal and subcoastal Western Australia. It is known as the Twenty-eight Parrot, the name being derived from its call, which sounds like "twenty-eight". The subspecies of the Australian Ringneck differ considerably in colouration. The red band and green belly are distinctive to the Twenty-eight Parrot. They are active during the day and can be found in eucalypt woodlands and eucalypt-lined watercourses. They nest in hollows in tree trunks. Their food includes nectar, insects, seeds, fruit and native and introduced bulbs. They will eat orchard-grown fruit and are sometimes seen as a pest by farmers. The species is not considered threatened but in Western Australia gets locally displaced by the introduced Rainbow Lorikeets that aggressively compete for nesting places.
