This is the 1st Event in the ENHANCES Global Lecture Series: 'Nature-based solutions for tropical coastal protection' Date: Nov. 18, 2025 15:00 GMT Title: Coastal Resilience for Industrial Environments Speaker: David Pryor, P.E., F. ASCE Waterfront Engineer Kimley-Horn Virginia Beach, VA, USA Abstract: Industrial facilities in tropical zones face significant risks due to the impacts of climate change, including rising sea levels, intense storms, and coastal erosion. Coastal resilience strategies are essential for safeguarding these facilities and ensuring their operational continuity. This abstract explores comprehensive approaches to enhancing coastal resilience, including incorporation of nature-based solutions. Nature-based solutions, such as the restoration of mangroves, coral reefs, and coastal wetlands, provide sustainable and cost-effective methods to mitigate coastal hazards. These natural barriers absorb wave energy, reduce erosion, and support biodiversity, thereby enhancing the resilience of coastal areas, however they are not always a suitable option for industrial environments. Engineered solutions like seawalls and revetments, complemented by eco-friendly practices such as green infrastructure, can further bolster protection. Integrated coastal zone management (ICZM) approaches that synergize engineering with nature-based solutions are recommended for holistic risk reduction. This presentation will discuss the merits of incorporating nature based solutions into engineering structures to provide industrial facilities with functional facilities that limit impact to the surrounding environment.
