This analysis has to be reliable, secure, reproducible, and easy to access in order to drive up the productivity of pathology departments that span the globe. As such, any digital pathology instrument should maximize throughput while providing excellent image quality and high machine uptime. Operation of the product should be seamless and effortless to the operator, from loading of the individual slide to its analysis, and every operation should be automated and self-calibrating. Core to the operation of the instrument is a scanning station, which usually consists of a 3-axis motion system. Two axes scan the individual slides relative to the imaging optics and a vertical axis moves to focus the objective on the slide. The motion of the scanning station requires a high degree of precision as it is examining cells on the order of 8-10 microns in size. This system also requires reproducible motion such that the scanning and analysis of one slide is consistent. The scanning of slides often occurs while the slide is moving continuously to deliver high throughput.
