Webinar "Processing uncertain futures of Ukrainian refugee children in German schools following the Russian invasion" Speakers: Dr. Ellen Kollender and Dr. Dorothee Schwendowius In our talk, we examine institutional exclusions of refugee students in Germany against the background of changes in European migration and education policies since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Drawing on concepts of critical time studies, we ask how exclusionary practices interact with the temporal logic of the public school system. Based on guided interviews with teachers, principals, and social workers in secondary schools, we show that practices of acceleration and the negation of biographical uncertainties regarding the students’ future trajectories are essential aspects of the prevailing institutional time structure in the German school system. Our findings relate to the broader sociopolitical discourse on (forced) migration in Germany, which has discouraged educational policies that recognize forced migration as a reality that requires sustainable responses.
