Many people claim it's a myth that you need big hands to play the piano, but that oversimplifies the issue. While it's true that anyone can technically play the piano regardless of hand size, having larger hands is a major advantage--and in some cases, a necessity. In this video I show how the physical reality of playing a keyboard that is oversized for my hands affects me as a jazz pianist. When playing large chords with tenths commonly used by artists like Oscar Peterson, the standard keyboard physically limits what I can do. Rolling chords may approximate the sound, but it's not the same, and mastering that workaround demands hours of unnecessary effort. The real myth isn't that big hands help; it's that pianists must adapt to an oversized instrument. We can't change our hands, but we can and should change the keyboard we play.
