It's hard to talk of best versions and best interpretations of Frankenstein. There have been so many great versions of the film. But this was the version that left the most lasting impression upon me. It is not in any way close to the Mary Shelley novel. But in its tone, it comes closer than most. The sense of doom, of rejection, and the ending in the ice... It is, for me, the most beautiful version. The James Whale films are the wittiest and most inventively iconic and the Hammer versions bring a certain quality of ruthlessness to the idea of a scientist who'll stop at nothing. But the tragic romanticism of the novel comes through. It was quite unique to have the story told in a three hour film (although I think I first saw it as a two-parter). Michael Sarrazin is excellent as the creature who starts off being called beautiful but ends up looking like the victim of a terrible wasting disease. Morbidity taking hold. Had the film been made a decade or so later, this would have been seen as a stand in for AIDS (as did Cronenberg's 'The Fly'). But this came from 1973, about the same time as the last few Hammer films. Jane Seymour had been breaking hearts as Solitaire in 'Live and Let Die' and here she played the doll-like and malevolent Prima. She later went to America and became a regular star in numerous TV series but I will always remember her best from these two films.
