[Kyushu U Connect] Science Salon #10 星形成の謎を照らし明かすShining a light on star formation

Join Kyushu University Science Communicators as they sit down to talk with researchers across Kyushu University who are breaking new ground both within their respective fields and across disciplines. Each guest's work reflects Kyushu University's VISION 2030, a “path to transform Kyushu University into a place that drives social change with integrative knowledge.” Today’s guest is Doris Arzoumanian, who joined Kyushu University in April 2025 as an Associate Professor on the Inamori Frontier Program, moving from the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan where she held an Assistant Professor position. Since obtaining her Ph.D in astrophysics from Paris-Diderot University in France, Arzoumanian has conducted postdoctoral research in France, Portugal and Japan. Arzoumanian gathers data from multiple telescopes across the planet to examine how stars form, with a particular focus on elongated molecular gas filaments—the main sites of star formation. By understanding the physical and chemical processes at play in star formation, Arzoumanian hopes to also shine a light on deep fundamental questions, such as how the universe is evolving, how planets are formed, and how our own solar system, where life emerged, came to be.
