From a precarious perch, join geology professor Shawn Willsey as he takes you up close and personal to a great exposure of a dark Eocene dike cutting through the pink Eocene Sawtooth granite near Alpine Lake in the jagged Sawtooth Mountains of central Idaho. These dikes formed sometime after the magma body cooled to form the granite, injecting a completely different type of magma into the granite where it cooled quickly to form these dark dikes, which tend to run NW-SE in this area.
