Ron Buccarelli was piloting the mighty Rare Bear for the 2006 Reno air races. Unfortunately, the Rare Bear team chased engine issues early in the week during qualifying. They managed to get her running, and Ron went up to put a qualifying time in the books. He managed to put down two hot laps, but just as he was about to cross the finish line, the engine let go. As he was pulling up off the course, smoke started to pour out of the engine. Ron used his speed and converted it into altitude allowing him to setup for an emergency landing on runway 14. The team posted the second fastest qualifying speed of 2006 at 455.774 mph, but unfortunately the engine was damaged beyond repair, and the team had to sit out the remainder of the races.
