Frost seeding Clover and Chicory food plots-GAME CHANGER!

FEB 2025 it's cold out, icy and wintry! Join me for a productive land management food plot episode as I take to the woods on a very cold and dreary day here on our Southern Missouri Ozarks property. Today I'll break out my Can Am XT850 Outlander and the ATV seeder and I will frost seed 9 different food plots in total! We'll also get a bit of a property tour, some drone video footage of my food plots for deer, some trail cam videos of some great bucks, and lots of deer and turkey using our new food plots that we just started this last fall and of course some vicarious fresh air to boot! All of these food plots for deer were created just a few months ago, in October 2024 when we did a major land clearing project and cleared around 12 acres of woodlands to make new future food plots. Since it was so late in the season, my fall food plots really struggled to succeed especially since we had a severe drought to boot. But since they were just cleared and have no new weed competition, this is a great time to frost seed my 4 clover blend and chicory to try to get a great head start this spring for these food plots. A couple of these did very well last fall, because I planted them early in the season so that they were able to survive the drought we had. In my clover mix I use a blend of Crimson clover, red clover, white clover, synery clover blend and one other one that I forgot the name of. I used about 75% clover and then 25% chicory. They are both perennial seeds and when well established will last up to 4 or 5 years if you maintain them. I know there is a lot of food plot experts that don't recommend many perennial food plots as they only want to draw in deer during the hunting season, but I disagree with this philosophy. I believe that the more year round food sources you have the more deer will call it home and be healthier overall with abundant food sources, thereby increasing the chances of growing bigger and healthier deer. We've been doing this for a long time now and we are still continually learning and improving our strategies, but frost seeding is one of mother nature's real bonuses that can help to give you a leg up! Now keep in mind that if you just frost seed over grass or a weedbed your spring plot will not succeed. But for overseeding fall food plots, or recenly worked up, or cleared areas, this is a great tool to get you started towards your fall food plots for this next coming deer season.
