Can infection during labor cause cerebral palsy? In this video, birth injury lawyer Adam Funk explains how infections during pregnancy, labor, or delivery can lead to brain injury and cerebral palsy in newborns. When an infection develops during labor—often after the rupture of membranes (when the water breaks)—bacteria can enter the birth canal and cause inflammation in the mother’s body. This condition is sometimes referred to as chorioamnionitis. When infection and inflammation occur, the baby can also experience an inflammatory response. In some cases, inflammatory chemicals can damage parts of the baby’s developing brain that control movement and motor function. Injury to these areas of the brain can lead to cerebral palsy, developmental delays, and lifelong neurological problems. Doctors and nurses are trained to monitor for signs of infection during labor, including: • Maternal fever • Elevated heart rate • Changes in amniotic fluid • Sweating or chills • Fetal heart rate abnormalities Early detection and treatment—often including antibiotics and sometimes delivery of the baby—are critical to protecting the baby’s brain. If infection is missed or not treated quickly, the baby may be exposed to prolonged inflammation that can cause permanent injury. If your child has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy and there were complications involving infection during labor or delivery, it may be important to understand what happened and whether the injury could have been prevented.
