With increasingly widespread electronic health record use, more than ever patient and clinician data are now at our fingertips. The way we use this data to change behavior—however—may determine whether patient care is improved. Utilizing a step-by-step process, while considering theories of human cognition, can help clinicians and patients make better healthcare decisions. In this seminar, Tom will illustrate how certain healthcare problems are inherently complex—deserving a deliberate and evidence-based approach to resolve. Then he will present his work on designing information displays for critical care. Finally, he will show how he is taking a similar approach to design interventions for increasing lung cancer screening in low-resourced primary care clinics. The Centre for Digital Transformation of Health advocates for the movement towards connected health and runs fortnightly public lunchtime seminars between 12-1pm. The Centre supports co-hosting seminar arrangements with The University of Melbourne and its partner organisations. Seminars may be held at a different venue, or on an alternative day and time in order to accommodate guest speakers or to promote jointly hosted events.
