Back during 2012 I dreamt of having an ACCO rear loader that was assigned to me alone, and finally in 2023 this became a reality. For a little while there I was having a break from work and tossing up my next move in my garbo career. All I knew is that I was sick of side arms and hell bent on getting back on rear loaders, with the desire for a refreshing gig and some physical activity for the sake of personal health. It was looking like I’d end up as a runner in North Sydney, which I’d tried out previously and was right up my alley, but something better came along instead. While undertaking research on historic Sydney waste collections, I ended up having a casual chat about a position that was available, essentially resulting in a spontaneous over-the-phone interview. I’d seen this specific job advertised online and was already curious, so once I learnt some details regarding the gig, I was sold on my future employment, with the dealbreaker being the truck at my disposal. In 2025 I’m with a local business called Fretus Waste Services, which has a sizeable customer base mainly in the Hornsby region. The company may not be well known today, but multiple generations of the Fretus family were involved in the past waste industry for an extensive period. The side I work for actually brought the Rapid Rail System into Ku-ring-gai Council, which was the first fully automated residential waste service in the country. Once Collex took over Ku-ring-gai in 1998, this last Fretus family operation came to a close, but things were revived again in the 2000s with a fresh start in the commercial and industrial sector, which is the enterprise I’m engaged in. Old fashion values, extreme job simplicity, easy going conditions, zero workplace politics and no overkill rules or procedures to abide by have been pull factors that have drawn me to where I am – contrary to how it is working elsewhere. The starring rear loader is none other than a MacDonald Johnston JP5 mounted to an Iveco ACCO. The cab chassis is dated August 2010, being the final year these were produced as Euro 4, meanwhile the compactor body is dated December 2010, being the final month this body was built. In other words, what I drove was one of the last of its kind put together, which feels very significant given the awesome machinery it is. This specific truck was originally ordered and utilised by Bankstown Council for MUD bulk bins, put to work in the first half of 2011 alongside a twin new vehicle. It would have been in 2018 when it joined the Fretus organisation, becoming the new frontline general waste truck, seeing the original little 4x2 Garpac/Hino relieved of the heavy work. I used to see this Iveco around on occasion while I was based in Willoughby and always thought it’d be cool to drive it one day! I’ve done it again by uploading an extra lengthy duration, but it’s for the diehard fans that appreciate this equipment and action, not to mention it’s for my memories. I drove this Mon to Fri for 17 months and soaked up every moment, knowing it’d highly likely be the last JP5/ACCO I’d use and the final traditional ACCO I’ll get to drive. On another note, it’s also the very last truck I shot with my long-running JVC camera, which finally gave up on me after 16 years – don’t forget to ensure a viewing at 720p quality! I hope this special upload is enjoyed thoroughly to the extent it is watched. I intended to create a sample of my time with this truck, all taken during the dark hours showing everywhere quiet and deserted, with only Mitch and machine handling rubbish. I included the basic three bin sizes, got the best driving clips I could achieve, and halfway along there is a sweet unload showing 6 tonnes of mixed waste being ejected. I even have a clip showing manual pack at engine idle, which was necessary with this ACCO to make sure my presence was unknown to residents. I felt like a boss driving this thing around, it was probably the most badass garbage truck getting across the north shore in the end. It had the classic garbage truck aesthetic and also the right sound produced by a certain red Cummins engine and exhaust. I miss the noise output from this rig, it really made for a great listen from the driver seat and it just killed the silence in a location. Unfortunately, what you hear in the video doesn’t do justice for how it was in person, something which is very much a thing of the past in Australia nowadays. Saying that, I can report this truck was moved on in November 2024, as it had done its distance, was becoming expensive to keep in working order and its robustness was uncertain. Amusingly, when I shared the Fretus Garwood/Hino video 9 months ago, I fantasised the idea of using a bigger 6x4 version on my run one day, and literally that next Monday morning the chief informed me he was placing an order for such a truck!
