On a Monday in June 2011 I spent the morning just beyond western Sydney to get further footage from the Blue Mountains region. A priority was the clean-up service, which was still a scheduled zone system at the time, but has since been converted to an on-call booking system. I had hopes I would get the old Heil 5000 ACCO rear loader I’d seen at the landfill during my initial 2008 visit, but on this occasion, it turned out that truck was back at the depot in the workshop. Sadly I never managed to get more of this old International beyond the unloading shot uploaded many years ago, nor did I succeed with anything once it joined Cozens Paper Recycling as a bale truck. I’d been told about the Scania rear loader which also did clean-up, and sure enough this was the old rig I managed to locate around 7am on that Monday. I can imagine both of these trucks having done the historic 55L garbage runs, but I actually believe this Scania and the International were not original Blue Mountains units. The compactor on this truck is of course from MJE and was known as the RL6000 and JP6 model, but the origin of this body goes back to E-Z Pack from the USA. Unlike typical slide sweep packers with a blade that remains in a fixed position, the angle of the sweep blade on this design changes while the slide panel travels up and down, which is easier to understand when you watch it. Definitely an old school feel about the clean-up service here with the truck, quite contrary to the rear loaders you see today, you’ve got the lever linkages for packer controls and a high pitch whine from the hydraulic pump, although also that lovely traditional diesel rumble from the Scania engine. There is a short driving shot at the start and end of the video, but I wish I threw in a couple more driving clips so we could hear a bit more of the Scania itself moving along, otherwise you do hear it up close and personal when I walk to the front of the cab at one point. It appears I did some trimming and edits on this video previously for whatever reason, not sure what I cut out of the original production, but anyway here’s something to see of something which is long gone. The council ended up purchasing two second hand JP5/Hinos to replace the old clean-up trucks and not overly long ago they updated with brand new Bucher/Hinos for the job. If you’re curious about the little Isuzu tipper following along, that was for metals recycling. Cheers to the chill crew for being cool with me documenting this classic collection vehicle.
