By the year 1914, it became clear that "James Scott" could only refer to one individual in the world of music: Missouri's very own crowned champion of Ragtime. Though it would not be long before Scott expanded his musical experience to even greater fields, having formed a small all-black band in Carthage around this time. (Which would maintain a steady presence up until the late 1920s!) With a hearty 10 years of refined experience in music alone, Scott's ever dynamic "Climax Rag" captured his evolving style like never before. In contrast to his preceding rags, Climax starts out with the classic "call and response" pattern, effectively tying into the melody's descending notion. By time of the Trio, the call & response is then traded in for a variation on the descent, all before concluding with a rather "climatic" ending. ;] Just as with Ragtime Oriole (1911) and Grace & Beauty (1908), Climax eventually became another popular hit for Scott, seeing endless band interpretations over the years. (Even to this current day! A great one I recommend is Tuba Skinny's take from 2022: • "The Climax Rag" - Tuba Skinny ) The most notable of such however stems from jazz icon Jelly Roll Morton, who recorded a take with his band in 1939.
