Segâh Âyin / II. Selam

There is a beautiful word in the Arabic, Ottoman, and Persian musical tradition: “mutribân.” It does not simply mean “musicians.” The word comes from the root ṭ-r-b (ṭarab), which describes the state of musical ecstasy, the profound emotional and spiritual resonance that music can awaken in the human soul. In the Mevlevî tradition, this word survives in the expression “Mutrib Heyeti,” the ensemble of musicians performing the âyin. In this selam, when the poet calls “Ey mutribân!” it is as if he were addressing the musicians of the ceremony themselves. Ey âşıkân, ey âşıkân, ez âlem-i cân âmedem Ser der fiken, cân der taleb, cûyâ-yı cânân âmedem Ey mutribân, ey mutribân, savt ez nevâ âverde’em Çun andelîb ez şevk-i gul her dem gazelhân âmedem Dûş ber dergâh-i izzet kûs-i sultânî zedem Hayme ber bâlâ-yi dâru’l-mulk-i rabbânî zedem O lovers, O lovers, I have come from the realm of the soul.
