🚀 Card Game Hack for Older Adults 🚀 ⭐️ Introduction to Fine Motor Coordination Skills Training There are many dexterity, grasp and release, and fine motor coordination tools and tricks available to help your occupational therapy patients achieve their goals. As occupational therapists, it is our role to use therapeutic exercises and introduce adaptive equipment and different hacks to assist our patients with ADLs and leisure activities/hobbies. Watch the video above for a cool hack for your patients who want to play cards but can't grasp or hold the cards! Along with teaching this hack you can then work on strengthening your patients fine motor skills in order to potentially not need to use it. ⭐️ Tools to Improve Fine Motor Skills There are many fine motor skill therapy products available for a reasonable cost. Here are a few examples to improve fine motor coordination, hand and finger mobility, and hand function Dressing Boards One of my favorite tools for increasing fine motor coordination skills, especially for dressing, is this six-pack of dressing boards. This set comes with boards for lacing, buttoning, zippering, snapping, tying, and buckling. They are compact and light to put right in your therapy bag. My clients love practicing with them and you will too. You can click here to purchase the boards for your toolbox. If my patient has arthritis or another limitation inhibiting their fine motor skills, I will have them use a button hook. You can buy the button hook here. It has a built-up, non-slip soft grip handle to help fasten those hard-to-pinch buttons. Elastic Finger Stretchers I love these finger stretchers to use as a warm-up exercise before any functional activity. These are useful to increase the range of motion and tone of the hand and wrist muscles. This particular includes three levels of resistance to help with strengthening Link Chains I love this set of link chains because of all the colors. However, you can also use paper clips to form a chain. I find these more challenging than paper clips due to their thickness and texture. Linking pieces together can help to improve hand-eye coordination, spatial skills, and dexterity. Pegboard Stacks What I love about this particular tool is that it is not just a pegboard. It is also a peg stacker, requiring more advanced fine motor coordination skills, dexterity, depth perception, and strength. One variation you can facilitate with this board is to have your patient stack pegs following a color pattern for more advanced cognition. Bubble Wrap Another one of my favorite tools for fine motor skills training is bubble wrap. I use bubble wrap often with my patients, therefore this large roll comes in handy. I simply cut a smaller piece and give to my patients as part of their "homework" to improve their pincer grasp and dexterity. 00:00 Introduction 00:16 Playing cards with your patients 00:40 Hack to play cards 01:14 Setting up your cards 🎥 Subscribe & Turn on Notifications for more physical therapy and occupational therapy patient-centered activities WITH documentation examples @thenoteninjas ⭐ For those PTs, OTs, or assistants ready to streamline treatment planning and documentation, explore our comprehensive resources: 🔑 Join the Note Ninja Membership- Your one-stop shop to end the documentation and treatment struggle and overwhelm!
