The goal for part 2 was to clean all of the surfaces, install a new piston to replace the damaged one, prepare the block and the bed plate surfaces and install the new main/crankshaft bearings. Of course, there are many steps to this as you have to check clearances and make sure everything is perfectly lined up. After the bearings were installed, I test fitted the crankshaft in the engine with Plastigauge on all of the journal, torqued the crankshaft bolts and then took it back apart. Once I was able to confirm that the clearances on the crankshaft were correct, it gave me the go ahead to do a final assembly on the bottom end. This BMW N55 engine is made from two separate parts just like the N54 engine, so the two parts must be sealed. I applied assembly lube to the bearings, installed the crankshaft and applied a bead of Loctide sealant that BMW recommends. Then I installed the bedplate for the last time! Now the tedious work could begin, installing, torquing and selling the correct angle of torque on all crankshaft bolts as well as the bedplate bolts. Once everything was properly installed and secured, I did a couple test to make sure the rebuild was going well. I tested the rotational drag on the crankshaft as well as determined crankshaft axial clearance.
