In too many communities, it is easier to buy liquor than fresh produce. Easier to find processed snacks than fresh meat or vegetables. This is the reality of food deserts, neighborhoods where access to affordable, nutritious food is limited or nonexistent. But food insecurity is not just about supply. It is about dignity. Pastor and community leader DeWayne McCoy explores how the shift from community-centered markets to profit-driven grocery chains reshaped entire neighborhoods. When local stores disappeared, so did access, accountability, and compassion. What replaced them were systems built to maximize revenue, not restore resilience. But this is not a talk that ends with frustration. It is a blueprint for what is possible. With more than two decades of experience in grocery operations, logistics, and hunger relief, McCoy shares a proven hybrid model that combines sustainable retail with a free food pantry. A business designed not only to generate revenue, but to strengthen the very community it serves. This talk will change how you think about hunger, business, and what it means to build systems that actually help people. Because when compassion returns to commerce, dignity returns with it, hunger is no longer inevitable, and real change becomes possible. And the question becomes: if it can work here, why not everywhere? Founder of The After Market and Pastor of The Foundation Christian Center. He has more than 25 years of experience in the food industry, including leadership roles at Las Vegas’ Three Square Food Bank. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
