International Patient Summary Challenge 2025 - Maximilian Kurscheidt | FHIR DevDays 2025

This presentation was part of #FHIRDevDays 2025, the premiere event for #FHIR implementers organized by ‪@FirelyTeam‬ and ‪@HealthLevelSevenInc‬. Talk description: The International Patient Summary (IPS) is a standardized collection of clinical information that provides a snapshot of a patient's current health status. 20 students from Heilbronn University and Universidad de Chile worked on the IPS Challenge 2025, where they implemented five demonstrators using the FHIR IPS Implementation Guide (IG), which were also presented at the HL7 Chile Connectathon. The use cases focused on providing a medical summary for patients with hypertension, food intolerance, surgery, diabetes, and asthma requiring cross-border care. An extended collection of test scenario resources was generated and published as an IG. We present lessons learned in the following categories: Interoperability challenges in sharing an IPS across borders Challenges in providing access to the IPS How to visualize longitudinal data? Challenges in translating FHIR and terminology resources Handling medical images Generic IPS viewer vs. use case specific application FHIR DevDays videos are exclusively available to the event's participants for half a year and made public on the FHIR DevDays YouTube channel after that.
