Fishermen pass oil tankers anchored off Punta Cardon STORYLINE: Tiny boats of bustling fishermen casting their nets out in the water floated next to a massive oil tanker on Thursday off the oil-rich shores of northwestern Venezuela. Refineries and oil tankers seemed to be operating in normalcy nearby the shore, while the Trump announced the U.S. seized a sixth oil tanker offshore the coasts of Venezuela, saying it has ties to the South American country. A sense of calm lingered at the shore, less than two weeks after an American military operation deposing President Nicolás Maduro, and as his successor announced sweeping changes ahead for the country’s oil sector. The skyline of Punta Cardón, hundreds of miles east of the Venezuela capital, is marked by heavy machinery of oil processing centers, which send smoke billowing into the sky. It’s rural swathes of the country like this that’s economy has been defined by oil that the Trump administration now has its eyes on. Despite the promise of a seismic shift ahead, workers at salt flats keep hammering away, men wander with red overalls from their jobs at the state-run oil company and wind billows over families quietly bathing in the sea.
