Matthew Chapter 5: The Laws of the Heart In this chapter, Jesus climbs a mountain, sits down, and begins to teach His disciples about what it truly looks like to live a life that pleases God. He moves the focus from outward rules to inward character. 1. The Beatitudes (Verses 1–12) Jesus begins with a series of "Blessings" (The Beatitudes). He flips the world’s view of success upside down, stating that God’s favor is on: The poor in spirit, the mourners, the meek, and those who hunger for righteousness. The merciful, the pure in heart, the peacemakers, and those persecuted for doing right. 2. Salt and Light (Verses 13–16) Jesus gives His followers their identity in the world. Salt: They are to preserve what is good and add "flavor" to the earth. Light: They are to be like a city on a hill, doing good works so that others see them and give glory to God. 3. Fulfilling the Law (Verses 17–20) Jesus clarifies that He didn't come to get rid of the Old Testament Law, but to fulfill it. He warns that righteousness must go deeper than the legalism of the Pharisees. 4. The "But I Say Unto You" Teachings (Verses 21–48) Jesus takes several well-known commandments and explains their true spiritual meaning. This section is known for the phrase: "Ye have heard that it was said... but I say unto you." Anger: It’s not just about not killing; it’s about not harboring heart-hatred. Lust: It’s not just about not committing adultery; it’s about keeping your thoughts pure. Love for Enemies: Perhaps His most radical teaching—Jesus commands His followers to love their enemies and pray for those who persecute them.
