With a serious winter storm looming over the entire US "East of the Rockies", we found ourselves in the crosshairs in Carlsbad, New Mexico. With a forecast of single-digit temperatures and an inch of ice, we made a game-time decision to leave a night early and race the storm south to El Paso. It was the right call. Hours after we drove through Guadalupe Pass, the highway was shut down. We had escaped but needed a new plan. We settled on South Franklin Mountain from the city side via McKelligon Canyon. What started as a desperate backup plan turned into a surprisingly rugged alpine adventure involving accidental Class 4 scrambling, a route protected by chains, and sweeping views from the US border looking deep into Mexico. The Climb: Objective: South Franklin Mountain (6,791') Route: Ron Coleman Trail via McKelligon Canyon Elevation Gain: ~1,900 ft Class: 2/3 (with some optional spicy scrambling) Chapters: 0:00 The Highway Closed Behind Us (The Escape) 0:40 Plan C: Starting from McKelligon Canyon 1:23 Into the Clouds 1:45 The Best Food in El Paso (L&J vs Taconeta) 2:39 Off Route: Accidental Class 4 & The Chains 3:56 The Summit of South Franklin 4:38 Descent & Views of Mexico (Outro) #ElPaso #SouthFranklin #Mountaineering #Texas #WinterStorm #Hiking
