In this episode of Explore Life, we visited my FAVORITE place we've found (so far) in Nevada for epic stargazing AND rockhounding: Scotty's Junction. The journey up there takes 2.5 hours from Las Vegas and is a wonderful drive. This location is public land and hosts a large variety of cool rocks to find, from volcanic specimens like xenocryst-loaded lithic tuff, to Apache tears (including chatoyant pieces), chalcedony, quartz, quartzite of various colors, rhyolite, jasper, and more. We even found mahogany obsidian Apache tears and OPAL! I love this place because it's a double-whammy: not only does the Junction host a wide variety of colors and types of rocks/minerals, but it's a great location to stargaze and watch meteor showers because it's so far removed from major cities. Also, I love volcanic geology! Come along with me for the adventure, and I'll even show you how to get to the exact places we went! This video is pretty long, so I'll add some chapters to help you find the more interesting parts.
