SERIES: THE HEART OF THE GOSPEL Week 3 — Believing with the Heart: Righteousness by Faith March 01, 2026 — Murray Family Church - Trice Seargent Series Theme: God doesn’t just change what you do — He changes who you are by giving you a new heart. Have you ever done something nice for someone … and then wondered if it was enough? Have you ever left a conversation thinking, “I hope that fixed it”? “I hope they’re not still upset”? “I hope we’re good”? Now take that feeling — and apply it to your relationship with God. For many believers, that’s exactly how they live. “I hope I prayed enough.” “I hope I’ve repented enough.” “I hope God’s not disappointed in me today.” “I hope I’m still in good standing.” And underneath all of that is one deep question: Am I truly right with God? How you answer that determines: How you pray How you worship How you handle failure How you approach God How you see yourself If righteousness depends on you → you will live anxious and exhausted. If righteousness depends on Christ → you will live secure and at peace. 1. RIGHTEOUSNESS IS RECEIVED IN THE HEART Romans 10:10 (NASB 2020) “for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.” Key Truth: Righteousness begins in the heart — not in performance. The heart believes Righteousness results Faith is not just agreeing mentally. It is trusting personally. Study Reflection: Do I trust Christ — or do I still trust my effort? Where do I feel pressure to “earn” standing with God? 2. JUSTIFICATION IS INSTANT Romans 5:1 (NASB 2020) “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,” “Having been justified” = done, settled, completed. Not progressive Not probationary Not fragile Because of Jesus: You have peace with God You are not under evaluation Your standing is secure Study Reflection: Do I live like I have peace with God? Or do I live like I’m still being tested? 3. RIGHTEOUSNESS IS NOT SELF-MADE Philippians 3:9 (NASB 2020) “and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith,” Paul rejected: Law-based righteousness Performance-based righteousness Self-produced righteousness He chose: God-given righteousness Faith-based righteousness Christ’s righteousness Key Truth: You don’t produce righteousness. You receive it. Study Reflection: Where am I tempted to rely on my own goodness? What would it look like to rest in Christ’s righteousness? 4. THE GREAT EXCHANGE 2 Corinthians 5:21 (NASB 2020) “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin in our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” This is the Gospel in one verse. Jesus took: Your sin Your guilt Your shame Your judgment You receive: His righteousness His acceptance His standing His favor Illustration: Like a mortgage paid in full — You don’t keep making payments “just in case.” Study Reflection: Am I still trying to pay for what Jesus already paid? What would change if I truly believed the debt is gone? APPLICATION Stop Trying to Earn What Jesus Already Gave Many believers say: “I know I’m saved… but I’m not sure God is pleased with me.” But if you are in Christ: God sees you in Christ. Your righteousness is not improving or declining. Your standing is settled. Security does not produce laziness. Security produces growth. SALVATION TRUTH Romans 10:10 (NASB 2020) “for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness…” Romans 5:1 (NASB 2020) “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,” Righteousness is: Not earned Not improved Not maintained by striving It's Received by faith Peace with God is available now. Not after self-improvement. Not after behavior change. Right now. WEEKLY PERSONAL STUDY GUIDE Read Each Day: Day 1: Romans 10 Day 2: Romans 5 Day 3: Philippians 3 Day 4: 2 Corinthians 5 Day 5: Reflect and pray through all four passages Journal Questions: Do I believe righteousness is a gift — or a reward? Where do I still feel like I must earn God’s approval? How would my prayer life change if I truly believed I have peace with God? What would it look like to live this week secure instead of striving?
