THE HEART OF THE GOSPEL - WEEK 1 “God Looks at the Heart” Series Title: THE HEART OF THE GOSPEL Series Statement: God doesn’t just change what you do — He changes who you are by giving you a new heart. WEEK 1 — “God Looks at the Heart” Trice Seargent — Murray Family Church — February 8, 2026 Primary Text: 1 Samuel 16:7 Supporting Texts: Proverbs 4:23, Jeremiah 17:9, Mark 7:20–23 BIG IDEA This Week: God is not impressed by outward appearance — God is after the heart. KEY SCRIPTURE 1 Samuel 16:7 (NASB 2020) “But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for God sees not as man sees, since man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.’” 1) GOD SEES WHAT PEOPLE CAN’T SEE People look at: Performance Appearance Charisma Reputation Achievements God looks at: Motives Desires Honesty Humility Surrender Faith Illustration: God doesn’t just look at the outside of the house — He checks the foundation. 2) THE HEART IS THE CONTROL CENTER OF LIFE Proverbs 4:23 (NASB 2020) “Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life.” Truth: Your life is downstream from your heart. Your… Words Decisions Habits Relationships Worship …all flow from your heart. 3) THE NATURAL HEART HAS A PROBLEM Jeremiah 17:9 (NASB 2020) “The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; who can understand it?” This is a diagnosis, not a compliment. Apart from God, the human heart is: Deceitful Sick Self-justifying Self-protecting Self-centered The world says: “Follow your heart.” God says: “Your heart needs to be made new.” 4) JESUS TAUGHT THAT SIN FLOWS FROM THE HEART Mark 7:20–23 (NASB 2020) “And He was saying, ‘That which comes out of the person, that is what defiles the person. For from within, out of the hearts of people, come evil thoughts, acts of sexual immorality, thefts, murders, acts of adultery, deeds of greed, wickedness, deceit, indecent behavior, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness. All these evil things come from within and defile the person.’” Key truth: The problem isn’t just “out there.” The problem is in here. And this is why we need Jesus to rescue us. Sin is not just behavior — sin is a heart condition. Jesus is the only one who can fix our heart condition. 5) THIS IS WHY WE NEED THE GOSPEL If the problem is the heart, then the solution is not: “Try harder” “Be better” “Do more religious things” The solution is: God must do something supernatural. Salvation is not behavior modification — it is heart transformation. APPLICATION: A HEART CHECK Ask yourself these questions this week: What is my heart full of lately? What do I run to when I’m stressed? What do I think about when I’m alone? What do I get most angry about? What do I most fear losing? These reveal what is ruling the heart. My personal heart-check takeaway: PRAYER RESPONSE Lord, search my heart. Show me what needs healing, surrender, and renewal. I want a heart that honors You — not just a life that looks good on the outside. Amen.
