In the tense aftermath of Uganda’s elections, political battles are increasingly shifting from campaign platforms to courtrooms. Across the country, lawyers representing members of the National Unity Platform (NUP) are moving between prisons and courts, pushing for bail and due process for detained leaders and supporters. At the center of today’s dramatic court session in Gulu was Lina Zedriga, NUP’s Deputy President for the Northern Region. What was expected to be a routine court mention quickly turned into a day of technological chaos, legal arguments, and a fresh remand order. Dr. Zedriga initially appeared via Zoom from Gulu Main Prison, but unstable internet, broken audio, and unclear communication made the session impossible to proceed. Her defence team argued that she could not properly follow submissions affecting her liberty raising concerns about her constitutional rights. Presiding Chief Magistrate Augustine Alule Koma ruled in favor of the defence and ordered her physical production in court. By 1:00 PM, Dr. Zedriga was brought physically before the court. However, the afternoon session brought another twist. State Attorney Patricia Adyedo requested more time to review the bail application documents submitted by the defence. The court granted the prosecution’s request. As a result, Dr. Zedriga was further remanded as investigations into charges of inciting violence under Section 79 (1) of the Penal Code Act continue. This case is unfolding within a highly sensitive post-election climate, with NUP maintaining that many of its members face legal pressure, while government authorities insist that all actions are grounded in law. What happens next? Will the State oppose the bail application? Will the court grant her temporary freedom? Or will she remain behind bars as investigations continue? What began as a disrupted Zoom hearing has now evolved into a pivotal moment in one of the most closely watched post-election cases — highlighting the intersection of technology, due process, and the right to liberty.
