This video of an adult summer Temminck's Stint (Calidris temminckii; Temmincksnipe) is from Tinnhølen lake on Hardangervidda in early July. One of my favorite places. I was up here alone for several days. Can anyone read the band on the left leg? I am getting 35614/5 on the top row. There is a banding station at Finse some kilometers further north on Hardangervidda. Temminck's Stint banded in Finnmark in the far north of Norway have 3 colored bands and a metal ring. UPDATE ON ORIGIN OF THE RINGED BIRD. I filmed the bird on July 7, 2017 at Tinnhølen. Where and when the bird was ringed was unknown. On November 24, 2021, Terje Lislevand from the University of Bergen was able to confirm that he ringed this bird with ID number E535614 as a fledgling on July 11, 2010 at Tinnhølen. Terje is senior curator of birds and mammals at the University Museum, Department of Natural History. That's almost 7 years between ringing at the nesting site and the video of the adult bird at same location. This is fantastic going for a bird species with a life expectancy of 1-5 years! Quite likely, this bird has been travelling back and forth between Tinnhølen on Hardangarvidda and the Niger River til Mali. See studies below for information on breeding and migration. In a study of Temminck's Stint migration pattern, Lislevand and Hahn found that birds banded in Norway use a skipping-type migration pattern with short stopovers to reach non--breeding territory, primarily along the Niger River in Mali. Leaving breeding grounds in late July, the birds reach north Africa in 10-27 days, where the spend about 2 weeks before making the final leg of the journey across the Sahara. These wildlife videos are both documentary and impressions of an experience. I hope you get a sense of being there: from the Rock Wren of remote Willis Creek Slot Canyon, Utah, singing Whinchat in the coastal heathland of Norway, a band of Arabian Babblers in the desert sands of Israel, to soaring Kites over Kyoto, Japan. The playlists are organized by geographical region and topic (singing birds, shorebirds, etc). The 200+ videos are from many different places across the globe, with a focus on birds of North America and the Western Palearctic, including Europe, Israel and Morocco.
