A Lake in the Sky - birds of Hardangervidda - Norway

A place for getting lost. The first week of July, the mountain plateau of Hardangervidda presents a never-ending landscape of snowfields and meltstreams, mounds, bogs, and still lakes. As clouds course low on the horizon, a thin crust of life brushes the sky. This is the Tinnhølen Lake and Langevatnet region of Hardangervidda National Park, one of the best areas in southern Norway for mountain breeding birds. This video includes several clips of Lapland Bunting, singing Horned Lark (2:08), Dotterel (2:54), Black-throated Diver, Dunlin, Eurasian Golden Plover, and Common Goldeneye. Heard only are Common Snipe, Meadow Pipit, Common Redshank. Birds seen/heard but not captured on video: Great Snipe, Temminck's Stint, Ringed Plover, Rough-legged Buzzard, Short-eared Owl. I walked miles and scanned far and wide hoping to see Long-tailed Skua. with no luck this time. The opening clip is from Hardanger Fjord. Traveling east, the road winds steeply up from Eidfjord past Vøringfossen (falls). Just below the treeline is Isdalsvatnet (Ice Valley Lake). Yellow Wagtail is shown, while Bluethroat sings loudly nearby. The weather on Hardangervidda changes quickly. There was much drizzle and thick fog, making navigation tricky. Word to the wise - bring a compass and don't count on GPS or cell phones. Fugler: lappspurv, fjellerke, boltit, storlom. myrsnipe, kvinand. Other wildlife: Common Frog (Rana temporaria) at 1:54 is the most common of the 3 frog species found in Norway.
