In this Pharmacology I lecture for Physician Assistant students, we review high-yield pharmacologic agents used in the management of common eye, ear, nose, and throat conditions seen in primary and urgent care settings. This session focuses on clinical application, safe prescribing, and exam-relevant decision-making. Medication classes are organized by organ system (nose, ear, and eye) to mirror real-world practice and PANCE-style questions. Topics covered include: • Nasal steroids and decongestants • Topical otologic antibiotics and otic analgesics • Topical ophthalmologic antibiotics • Mydriatics • Antiglaucoma agents • Ophthalmic anesthetics • Ophthalmic anti-allergy medications • Ocular lubricants For each class, we review: • Mechanism of action • Therapeutic applications • Routes of administration • Primary and serious adverse effects • Contraindications and clinical cautions (including glaucoma, tympanic membrane perforation, hypertension, and pediatrics) • High-yield patient education pearls • Common prescribing pitfalls Special emphasis is placed on: • Proper drop and spray technique • Avoiding medication-related harm • Recognizing high-risk populations • Understanding when not to prescribe • Linking pharmacology to real-world primary care decision-making This lecture is designed for early PA students but reinforces advanced clinical reasoning and board-style thinking.
