This is the fourth video in our series on Yap, filmed in September 2006, at one of the island’s most dramatic dive sites: Vertigo. Vertigo is a steep hard-coral wall that begins just a few meters below the surface before dropping sharply into deep blue water. With exceptional clarity and strong currents, it becomes a natural concentration point for marine life. In this dive, grey reef sharks and blacktip reef sharks circle calmly along the wall, often in large numbers. Barracuda hold position in tight schools, while thousands of tropical fish fill the upper water column above the reef. There is no baiting and no staging here — just a healthy reef system operating at scale. Because this footage was filmed in 2006, it also serves as a snapshot of the ocean at a particular moment in time. Coral reefs are resilient, but they are also vulnerable, and scenes like this remind us what fully functioning reef systems are capable of supporting. This video is not about action or spectacle.
