Have you ever heard someone say: 'the gender pay gap isn't an issue in my workplace because we have award wages, so we pay women and men the same for the same job'? Equal pay for equal work is absolutely fundamental. In fact it is the law. And it has been since 1969. But that's not what the gender pay gap measures. The gender pay gap shows difference in the average pay of women and men in a workplace. If women are overwhelming missing from the highest paid roles, and dominate the lowest paid roles in an organisation, this leads to a gender pay gap. That can happen even if an employer pays award wages. So instead of thinking of a gender pay gap as equal pay, think of it as a signal that value and opportunities are unevenly awarded. And that's something that should be addressed to make sure the workplace is fair for everyone.
