Some people believe the gender pay gap isn't real because men work more hours than women. But there's two problems with that explanation: 1. WGEA annualises part-time and casual workers to a full-time equivalent salary when it calculates the gender pay gap so its a like-for-like comparison 2. Extra hours, or overtime, is often not offered to women who have caring responsibilities, and women are sometimes overlooked for the opportunity because of bias or discrimination. Employers should ensure any overtime policy or allocation process they create gives women and men an equal opportunity to earn additional pay.
