Tomkins: "Have mercy upon me"

Thomas Tomkins is one of my favorite of the Tudor composers, though I admit that I have a weakness for that era of English music in the first place. This sets the first verse of Psalm 51, and as it is now Lent, the penitential psalms are coming into their own liturgically. This setting is in five parts (alto, two tenors, baritone, and bass) except for the last four bars which split the top line in two. The resulting six-part "Amen" is worth it, though, and to me the ascending figure gives some hope that God does have mercy on the speaker, being so moved by this beautiful piece of music.
