Sponsored by the North Carolina Psychological Association, this talk was offered by Dr. Jennifer Franklin on March 3, 2023, to the public. In this presentation, Dr. Franklin answers the following four questions: 1) What is the autonomic nervous system? 2) What is nervous system regulation? 3) How does regulating the nervous system promote gut (and body) healing? 4) How does a nervous system get regulated? Watch or listen and learn about importance of regulating your nervous system in order to heal your gut and body from a disorder of gut-brain interaction like IBS or some other psychophysiologic disorder. I focus on healing "medically unexplained" physiological problems in conjunction with addressing symptoms of anxiety, panic, interpersonal relationships, attachment, and trauma. I have experience working closely with leading physicians and researchers at one of the country's premier medical centers for treating brain-gut disorders, after having healed and recovered from IBS myself. About brain-gut disorders ⤵️ Brain-gut disorders, also known as functional gastrointestinal problems, refers to a variety of digestive problems that are "medically unexplained." The most common brain-gut disorder is Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), but there are other lesser-known diagnoses like functional dyspepsia, cyclic vomiting, regurgitation, reflux, and others. Brain-gut digestive problems are not purely physiological in nature; they are generated, perpetuated, and/or exacerbated by the interactivity between the brain and gut. The complexity of your gut makes healing from IBS and other brain-gut disorders a challenging, intricate process. While there are medications and diets to manage or ameliorate certain symptoms, physicians are typically unable to fix or cure brain-gut digestive problems because they are unable to determine a clear physiological cause. Your psychology and your nervous system have a lot to do with it. When I started this work, the medical community insisted that stress has nothing to do with digestive problems. Today, it is well-accepted that there is a relationship between stress, trauma, and digestive symptoms. Reducing stress by avoiding stress is not a realistic approach. I have a better one: Regulate your nervous system and increase your capacity for living in the high-stress, fast-paced world in which we live.
