A visit to Norfolk Wildlife Trusts Reserve in Hickling Norfolk #birds #birdwatching #bird In today’s video I meet up with friends and we visit Hickling Broad Nature Reserve. This is run by Norfolk Wildlife Trust. It had been snowing overnight, but luckily for us, the sun was now out and the snow is melting fast. One by one we visited every bird hide. All beautiful designs which allow you to see 180 or 360 degree panoramic views. During our time there we were lucky enough to see a Bittern, Hen Harrier, Kingfisher, Bearded Tits, Buzzard, Marsh Harriers, Fieldfare and a wonderful Chinese Water Deer at the Raptor Roost. Beside the Raptor Roost, stands Stubb Mill. This mill featured on Countryfile. In the early 20th Century, Whiteslea estate at Hickling Broad was visited by ministers, aristocrats and royalty and they would stay in Whiteslea Lodge which was a shooting lodge. Shooting the birds and geese was regarded in those days as a popular sport. In 1927, Lord Desborough purchased the estate and organized the shooting parties. Christopher Cadbury was a frequent visitor to the estate and in 1944 he was given the opportunity to purchase the Estate from Lord Desborough for £5,000. He agreed to the purchase but Lord Desborough died before it’s completion. Lady Gage, his daughter, had death duties to pay so doubled the sale price to £10,000 All the finer details get complicated at this point, so it’s easier just to say that, since 1945, the Norfolk Wildlife Trust reserve, has been managed by a dedicated team of people to keep it a safe haven for all the wildlife. We are lucky to be able to visit and see the wonderful wildlife which call this area their home. ****** Support: To support my channel, should you wish to do so ( as this has also been asked in the comments) But it is by no way compulsory or expected, just to be absolutely clear.
