My easy method to prevent trailhead car break-ins—what I leave open, what I hide, and how I make my car look worthless to thieves. In this video, I share the simple strategy I use to make my car less attractive to thieves—something that’s worked for me over hundreds of hikes without a single break-in. While there’s no guarantee, this method is based on making it obvious to any would-be thief that there’s nothing in the car worth stealing. First, I clear out any valuables before I leave home—laptops, electronics, or anything that looks worth money. Once at the trailhead, I move anything I do need to bring (like sunglasses or a toll transponder) into a small bag and stash it with the spare tire. The key is to keep the cabin completely free of anything that looks valuable or hidden. To reinforce that message, I leave my glove box and center console open and empty. That way, if someone’s scoping out the car, they’ll see right away there’s nothing hidden. I lock the doors but make it easy for someone looking through the windows to know the car isn’t worth the hassle. I also ditch the gym bags—those can be magnets for break-ins. Instead, I use generic supermarket bags turned inside out and leave any clothes or gear looking obviously low-value and unorganized in the back. If you have a trunk, pull down the rear seat so it’s easy to see inside from the cabin. That way, nobody breaks a window just to check the trunk. The idea is to remove curiosity and reduce temptation. It’s part common sense, part presentation—and so far, it’s worked for me. --- Disclaimer: Some of these links are affiliate links where I’ll earn a small commission if you make a purchase at no additional cost to you.
