So what is it that makes a theology uniquely Christian? How do we know that we are being Christian theologians? What are the things that define Christian theology? How can we understand or put borders around what is truly Christian theology? Without the four things that I will be talking about today, any theology that has these out of balance or ignores them is becoming something that is not truly Christian theology. Christians are a people of the book; we are biblical people. And so, for any Christian to do theology without actually engaging scripture, I would argue that they've stopped doing genuinely Christian theology. John Wesley's theology was marked by Scripture, tradition, reason, and experience. Albert C. Outler called this the Wesleyan Quadrilateral. With Scripture as the foundation, we can draw from tradition, reason, and experience to form thoroughly Christian theology.
