What was the first Christian revival in history? Long before modern revival meetings, awakenings, or evangelical movements, the earliest renewal in Christianity emerged after Constantine, when Christianity became legal and culturally powerful within the Roman Empire. This video explores how monasticism—especially among the Desert Fathers and Mothers—functioned as the first major Christian renewal movement. Rather than celebrating Christianity’s new cultural comfort, early monastics responded with intentional withdrawal, radical discipleship, and spiritual discipline—offering a lasting challenge to what we might now call comfortable Christianity. In this video, we explore: • What “revival” means in early Christian history • Why renewal became necessary after Christianity aligned with empire • Two surprising outcomes of Christianity’s legalization • How desert monasticism embodied spiritual renewal • The major types of early monasticism (eremitic and cenobitic) • The long-term influence of monasticism on Christian theology and practice By examining figures like Anthony of Egypt, Pachomius, and Basil the Great, we discover how early Christians sought faithfulness in an age of cultural acceptance—and why their response still matters today. #monasticism #earlychurch Benedicta Ward - Sayings of the Desert Fathers: https://amzn.to/3nBVM61 Andrew Arndt - Streams in the Wasteland: https://amzn.to/3nunBNH St. Pachomius - The Rules of Pachomius: https://amzn.to/3Zq0AbX The Life of Anthony by Athanasius: https://amzn.to/3ZsXHHC St. Basil - On the Holy Spirit: https://amzn.to/3KnbWJA OR The Rule of St. Basil: https://amzn.to/3zlG2ag A GREAT place to start your journey of accessing the Early Christians: Robert Louis Wilken - The Spirit of Early Christian Thought: https://amzn.to/3TUKiqA If you enjoyed the video, go ahead and hit subscribe!
