There are many sophisticated appliances and tools you can use to make homemade yogurt, but sometimes simple can be better. We show you how to use a simple and inexpensive way to make excellent, thick yogurt using an updated old-fashion process. Our process involves culturing the yogurt in quart jars and it turns out nice and thick like greek yogurt, without the extra step of straining. Recipe for One Quart (adjust according to how much you want to make) 2 cups whole milk (2% milk works as well) 1 Tbs. cultured plain yogurt (you can buy an inexpensive small container of plain yogurt - make sure it has active culture in ingredients, or use some from previous made homemade yogurt). 1 Quart Jar with Lid 1 Quart Jar with Hot Water & Lid Temperature Gauge Whisk Heat milk on stovetop on medium low, until it reaches about 182 degrees. Stir occasionally. Remove from heat. Let milk cool down to between 110-115 degrees. Depending on how big a batch you make it could take up to an hour. We usually start at 45 minutes and do a first check around 30 minutes. Once it is between the 110-115 degrees, remove some and mix with your culture. Stir well. Add back into the main pot of milk and whisk or stir well. Add milk to quart jar, or jars. Put in a large stainless steele sauce pan with one quart jar of hot water. Add with one towel on bottom and 2 towels on top for extra insulation. Leave in oven overnight, or if making during the day at least 6-8 hours.Remove from pot, put in refrigerator and let it chill for approximately 7-8 hours, minimum.
