This is Andy from I love languages. Let's learn different languages/dialects together. Special Thanks to Samaw :) nii¹hao²! ngoai¹xi¹ Andy. nii¹go¹hao¹ma³? Hello! My name is Andy. How are you? Let's talk about the Jingning She Dialect. Jingning She Dialect: The Jingning She dialect, a variant of She Chinese (畲话, Shēhuà), is a unique mixed language spoken by the She people in Jingning County, Zhejiang Province. It is based primarily on Hakka Chinese but has significant layers of influence from the Hmong-Mien language family, particularly in its vocabulary and grammatical structure. Over time, exposure to surrounding languages—especially the Jingning variety of Wu Chinese—has led to notable lexical and phonological shifts in the dialect. In some areas, influence from the Min Dong (Eastern Min) dialect is also evident. Linguistically, She Chinese is controversial: some scholars classify it as a branch of Hakka, while others argue that it stands as an unclassified Sinitic variety with deep historical contact with Hmong-Mien languages. The Jingning She dialect is now endangered, with an estimated 8,000 speakers, mostly among the middle-aged and elderly. Younger generations often only speak regional Wu Chinese, accelerating the dialect's decline. She People and Culture: The She people (畲族), one of China’s officially recognized ethnic minorities, mainly inhabit southeastern provinces such as Zhejiang, Fujian, Jiangxi, and Guangdong. In Jingning, they have preserved distinctive customs, clothing, and legends that set them apart from neighboring Han communities. Culturally, the She trace their mythic origins to divine ancestors, including a legendary dog-headed figure who married into the Tang imperial family—an origin story that underlies their taboo against eating dog meat. Historically tied to the Miao and Yao ethnic groups, the She maintain strong traditions in mountain agriculture, festivals like the “March 3rd” singing celebration, and animistic spiritual practices. Despite government support for cultural preservation, modernization and linguistic assimilation continue to erode traditional lifeways and language transmission, especially among the youth. This video is created for educational, language awareness, and language preservation purposes. It aims to provide valuable insights and knowledge to viewers, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of different languages and their unique characteristics. By raising awareness about linguistic diversity, the video seeks to foster a greater respect and recognition for various languages, particularly those that are endangered or underrepresented. Additionally, it contributes to the preservation of languages by documenting and sharing linguistic knowledge, thus ensuring that these languages and their cultural heritage are not lost to future generations.
