Candida albicans is a pathobiont of the human gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It can contribute to the diversity of the healthy gut microbiome without causing harmful effects. When the immune function of the host is severely altered, C. albicans can translocate into the bloodstream (i.e. candidemia) and cause invasive infections. C. albicans can also outgrow the beneficial microbiota when the GI microbial balance is impaired - a pathological condition termed dysbiosis - leading to altered immune response and increased risk of infection and/or inflammation. Much of the recent progress in our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the fascinating ability of C. albicans to adapt to different host conditions/niches has been facilitated by the development of systems biology-oriented approaches that allow to provide a bird's eye view of the cellular circuitries operating during the expression of commensal versus pathogenic traits by C. albicans. In my research seminar, I will give an overview of my past and future work in this field, and outline how C. albicans is capable of successfully thriving within the changing host environment by relying on the function of crucial decision-making proteins: Transcription factors.
